Fourteen

Silas made a temporary move to Connor’s apartment over the week of the Fourth of July; however, he and Connor switched bedrooms for Silas’s sanity. The plan was that he would stay there through the summer so we could be within driving distance for the rare unscheduled chunks of time I had. He lived there a full week before I could meet up with him.

The first night I saw him, I had been at an event until about midnight before getting home. I texted him to ask how moving was going and he responded with a phone call. “I haven’t gotten a non-text message in two years,” I answered, quoting a line from New Girl.

“He most certainly did. He got calls from Cece and Elizabeth in the second episode of season three.”

“You’ve made it to season four!”

“It’s a long flight to Los Angeles. And then back. I’ve watched a lot of New Girl recently. The only reason I’ve watched it, though, is because you and your sister are constantly making references I know I’m not getting.”

“Do you feel left out?” I laughed.

“Maybe just a little. How was your day?”

“Long. I’m breaking in a new pair of nude heels and my feet are killing me.” I looked down at my blistered feet with a frown. “Which also means my hips and back hurt from trying to discreetly shift my weight off my feet. It’s a whole thing.”

“How many pairs of basically invisible heels does a woman need?”

“At least two broken in. Same with black. Other colors or styles I just have one. It’s like coat dresses; I have them in all kinds of colors and patterns, but I have two black.”

“What is a coat dress, exactly?”

I sent him a picture. “It’s a coat that looks like a dress. Just look at the picture. For reasons I’ll never understand, men can wear the same damn dress coat every day, every winter, but I can’t wear the same one twice in a row, or even in the same week, really. So my coats look like A-lined dresses that button down the front.”

“That’s the stupidest thing I’ve heard so far.”

“Fucking patriarchy. Men can have one fucking suit and wear it every day and no one bats an eyelash, but I need multiple outfits per day that have to be worn far enough apart that people won’t talk shit. Being a woman is exhausting, Silas.” I sighed.

“And apparently painful. If only I were there to help alleviate that.”

“That sounds magical.”

“You would have to take off your top and bra for this to be done properly. You’re there alone, right?”

“Yes.”

“Say yes and I’ll be there in twenty minutes, massage oil in hand.”

I briefly considered countering and saying I’d go to him, but I really had no desire to put shoes on. “Take Mish’s car and promise you will leave before morning when someone might see you.”

“Done. I’ll be there in twenty.”

“Silas, you live at least half an hour away.”

“I’ve been in the car since I called. I’ve been so close, but so far for way too long.
